California Sheephead #2

22 x 16″

Fish length 19.5 inches. Printed on Washi / Unryu paper.

I though this fish was more from up north cold water, and I always had the idea of this species on the kelp forest but during cold months you can find them easier here in southern Baja Peninsula.

The California sheephead (Semicossyphus pulcher), known locally in Mexico as vieja californiana, is a reef-dwelling fish found along the Pacific coast from California to Baja California Sur. It shows striking sexual dimorphism: adult males are large, with a black, white, and reddish coloration and a pronounced forehead, while females are smaller and reddish. This species is a sequential hermaphrodite, meaning many females transition to males during their lifetime. It lives in rocky reefs and kelp forests, feeding on sea urchins, mollusks, and crustaceans. Highly valued in recreational fishing, its presence reflects the health of reef ecosystems in Baja.
