The yellowtail (also known as jurel de castilla) is a pelagic fish that migrates from the cooler waters of Southern California to the warmer coasts of Baja California and Baja Sur during the winter, following warm ocean currents. This migration typically occurs from November to April and plays a key role in the region’s sportfishing season, especially in areas like San Quintín, Bahía de los Ángeles, and La Paz. Its arrival not only signals a healthy marine ecosystem but also boosts the local economy by attracting fishing tourism during the off-season, making it an iconic winter species in Baja.

I’d say Yellowtail is one of the most caught or wanted fish here in Baja during winter months (also the Jack Crevalle). This one was caught by a friend of a friend during late winter (I though I was not going to print one in the whole winter). Finally managed to make 4 prints, this one being 1/4 originals.

We gathered on a friends local to make a “jureliza”, with plenty of dishes from this fish.
