The fine-scale triggerfish (Ballistes polylepis) is a strong, laterally compressed reef fish found in the eastern Pacific, from California to Peru, including the waters around Baja California. Recognizable by its tough skin, small scales, and characteristic dorsal “trigger” spine, it is typically olive to grayish in color. It inhabits rocky reefs and coastal zones, feeding on hard-shelled invertebrates like sea urchins, crabs, and mollusks. While not a top sportfishing target, it is often caught incidentally and appreciated for its firm, white flesh. Its presence in Baja’s coastal waters increases during warmer months, contributing to the biodiversity of reef environments.
