About the original print
This was a 37 inch Yellow Fin Tuna caught in Pacific Costa Rican, offshore of Marina Pez Vela, Quepos. Printed over rice paper using the traditional Gyotaku direct method. Tuna are species with tinny scales, as faster is the fish, smaller they are. Using rice paper instead of fabric or cloth can make those scales pop and get printed with incredible details from the fish. Have a close look at the pictures :). Tunas are ths most dificult fish to print due to their roundness, that’s why I did the body first and then I continued cuting and printing the fins one by one.

About this species
The Yellowfin Tuna, scientifically known as Thunnus albacares, is a highly migratory fish inhabiting tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. Characterized by its streamlined body and vibrant yellow finlets, this species showcases metallic hues across its back transitioning into silver shades along its belly.
With a robust physique that can reach lengths exceeding seven feet and weights surpassing 400 pounds, the Yellowfin Tuna is a top predator in its habitat. Renowned for its speed and agility, it’s capable of swift bursts, surging through the water at impressive speeds, aided by its streamlined body and retractable fins.
Their diet primarily consists of fish, squid, and crustaceans, reflecting their position in the upper echelons of the oceanic food chain. These magnificent creatures play a vital role in marine ecosystems, balancing predator-prey dynamics.
The Yellowfin Tuna’s distinct lateral line, which runs along its body, aids in detecting vibrations in the water, enhancing its hunting prowess. Their iridescent skin and powerful, crescent-shaped tail characterize this species, showcasing a harmony of strength and elegance that’s often celebrated in artistic renditions like Gyotaku prints.
