About the original print

In April 2022 I had the incredible opportunity to make a Oarfish Gyotaku. This extremelly species are known to appear close to the surface when they die and, as the legend says, they appear just before earthquakes or tsunamis.

This rare species was washed off the sea in La Ventana, Baja California Sur, México and a client called me because something weird and really shinny appeared on the beach.

About this species

The Oarfish, also called Regalecus glesne, is a captivating inhabitant of the deep sea. As the longest bony fish, reaching up to 36 feet, its ribbon-like body, silver sheen, and red dorsal fin make for a striking sight. Rarely seen near the surface, it remains an enigmatic symbol of the ocean’s mysteries. With a peaceful demeanor, it feeds on zooplankton and crustaceans. Gyotaku prints of the Oarfish preserve its majestic form, allowing its essence to grace spaces in a captivating artistic portrayal.
